Are stem cell procedures for arthritis safe?



One major question is whether stem cell procedures for arthritis are safe. Possible complications include, malignancy, unrestricted growth, infection, autoimmune reactions, and pulmonary emboli (blood clots to the lungs).Dr. Paul Knoepler from UC Davis provided an encouraging report after reviewing a study by Peeters et al published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. The researchers the results of studies with a combined number of 844 cases. They found only 4 complications of which only two could be attributed to the procedure itself. Although the study had its flaws, the gist is reassuring news.
