Early complication rates in knee replacement surgery… a need for more stem cell therapies?

If you’re an active Boomer with knee arthritis, you’re probably thinking, “I’ll fix everything with a knee replacement when it comes time….
While knee replacement may work, let me tell you about some of the drawbacks.

This past year more than 700,000 knee replacement surgeries were performed in the United States. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons website says the complication rate is “low.”

So what does the term “low” meant. It turns out that the complication rate is 2% in the immediate time period after surgery. That includes death in 0 .53%, blood clots to the lungs, also known as pulmonary emboli, in 0.41%, and infection in 0.71% – and with the epidemic of methicillin resistant staph aureus or MRSA, that’s a real problem… a deadly one in many hospitals.

In fact, MRSA is the number one most feared infection in a hospital setting! MRSA is rampant in many hospitals. And if you get a MRSA infection in that joint replacement, it has to come out!
