Gene enhanced tissue engineering for arthritis treatment… what will it do for me?



The application of gene transfer to articular cartilage was pioneered by Evans and co-workers. Essentially these techniques aim to program cells to produce bioactive factors to promote their specialized functions. Therapeutic genes can be delivered to the synovium or directly to the area of cartilage damage. Gene transfer to cartilage defects can be achieved by either direct vector administration to cells located at or surrounding the defects, or by transplantation of genetically modified chondrogenic cells into the defect, as described by Tuan.
