Is there an alternative to knee replacement surgery? The guinea pig stem cell arthritis model…

Guinea pig science models… how are they going to helpo us with stem cell repair of cartilage? Sato and colleagues published a paper in Arthritis Research and Therapy showing that mesenchymal stem cells suspended in either hyaluronic acid or another buffered solution could produce articular cartilage. They used a guinea pig model of osteoarthritis. Instead of an artificial scaffold, they took their mixture and injected it directly into the arthritic joints. At 5 weeks post-transplantation, the researchers noted partial cartilage repair.
