Knee – September 18, 2009

A Stem Cell Procedure for Osteoarthritis of the Knee, My Experience

“I had a stem cell procedure on September 18, 2009 that is expected to alleviate some of the issues of my osteoarthritis (oa) by regrowing cartilage (and therefore NO knee replacement surgery). The formal name for the basic procedure is Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplant (AMSCT). My stem cells were harvested from the Iliac Crest in a procedure called Bone Marrow Aspiration and Concentration (BMAC). My procedure added the introduction of fat cells to stabilize the stem cells in the area of the existing cartilage of my knee.

I am excited about this procedure as an alternative to more invasive solutions. This procedure is performed in a (well equipped) office under local anesthesia in under 3 hours using the patients own tissue (no rejection). The patient walks out (on crutches), should be off them in a week and working back to full use of the knee after 3 weeks. The procedure is less expensive than full knee replacement, is low risk and can be repeated. Good for the insurance companies, the patients and the significant others that have to put up with the recovery.”

Shoulder ~ October 1, 2009

“I was experiencing more than 2 years of shoulder pain.  It was affecting my swimming, daily house chores, and other simple things such as reaching a dish from a kitchen cabinet.  It was becoming increasingly difficult to anything with a push/pull motion.  Dr. Wei talked to me about a stem cell procedure that could actually regrow cartilage and eliminate my pain.  I decided to have the procedure done!

I know that this will sound a little crazy, but I actually enjoyed the procedure.  It was not painful, and I really found it fascinating to watch the procedure on the ultrasound machine.  I felt no discomfort, and everything was done under a local anesthetic.  I experienced far less pain than I expected, and I didn’t use the pain medication that he prescribed.  I am now in physical therapy and have already experienced noticeable improvement.

I recommend this procedure to anyone who has osteoarthritis and may be looking at a new and more innovative approach to treating their disease.”

Rhonda Hoffman ~ Madison, Alabama ~ Procedure:  10/21/2011

“When I first researched knee regeneration, I learned of a clinic in Miami.  Then, my daughter helped me identify your center that was close to where she lives.   After viewing your website and listening to Dr. Wei on your website, as well as the ad for the other clinic in Miami, i was much more impressed with Dr. Wei.   And I liked his credentials.  I seemed to trust what he was saying.  I called!  Your people were very nice and you called me and then sent me an information packet and some on-line testimonials.

I presented the idea to my orthopedic surgeon.  He discouraged me and said stem cell regeneration was several years ahead before they would be doing these procedures but that it may eventually replace knee replacements for many.  However, he believed stem cell for me would only put off an inevitable replacement of my knee.

I put the information aside.  Sometime later, I met an Army surgeon friend of my Nephew, who gave me information on the damages they do during replacements.  I decided to come to see you for an evaluation.  I had met others that had difficulty with replacements.

I chose your clinic because I believed Dr. Wei when he said he could help me, I liked your staff and kindness.  It seemed like I would be cared for well!  The clinic was in a convenient location to my daughter. But, most of all, I was convinced he was the best because he is an expert in Arthritis and he is certified in Arthroscopy and he is honest and forthright in his oral & written information; thorough and just a great doctor!  I am very intuitive and read people well!”

Hip ~ May 21, 2010

Hi Don,
I wrote you last month that I was going from my home in California to Dr. Nathan Wei in Maryland for stem cell for my hip.  The doctor and his staff were fabulous.  The clinic is spotless and I never felt any pain.  Not even during the bone marrow. I’m only 10 days post treatment but still on crutches, but already I feel better and surprise I no longer have low back pain, which i had constantly before treatment.  I guess just a little plus.
I will keep you informed as to how I do.  I know it will take awhile as my hip was pretty trashed.   Please continue to recommend this doctor and his clinic.

“In comparing other centers, Dr. Wei was the only physician to provide any outcome data.”

Knee ~ June 27, 2008

“I had the stem cell procedure in June 2008.  I noticed a significant improvement almost immediately, but it’s 8 months later and I’m still feeling like a young school boy.  I am slowly building my strength back up with low impact exercises.  My range of motion is incredible, and I’m living my day… not worrying about knee pain.  I am looking forward to having the other knee done in the spring.”
