Cartilage consists of cells (chondrocytes) which sit inside a matrix.
Injury to cartilage leads to osteoarthritis.
Traditionally, joint replacement surgery has been the treatment after conservative measures have failed.
Mesenchymal stem cells, though, can provide an alternative treatment option.
