Successful tissue engineering… what does it take?



There are four main components required for successful tissue engineering. First, a scaffold to provide an adequate three-dimensional structure. Second, appropriate cells which are able to differentiate and maintain a specific cell phenotype. Third, the right bioactive ingredients such as growth factors, cytokines or hormones as a suitable stimulus for differentiation of the cells. Finally the tissues need to be able to withstand the mechanical and biochemical stresses of the environment into which they are placed.
