Synovium as a source of stem cells for osteoarthritis treatment?

Sakaguchi and colleagues published an interesting article in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism. They compared the properties of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from bone marrow, synovium, periosteum, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue. The stem cells were obtained from 8 donors during knee surgery for ligament injury. While all sources demonstrated robust growth, the investigators found synovium to be superior in terms of absolute ability to differentiate into cartilage.
