These “surgical” techniques not effective as alternatives to knee replacement

More than 700,000 knee replacements are performed annually. Is there an alternative to knee replacement surgery? Despite all the attempts such as chondrocyte implantation, microfracture, and such, the results as far as restoring cartilage integrity have been disappointing. This is because the implanted cells can’t secrete enough matrix, and can’t seem to integrate themselves into a normal appearing cartilage. Also, the implanted cells don’t live as long as they should, and are fully incorporated into organized cartilage tissue. In future episodes I’ll discuss what else can be done to overcome these hurdles.
