Three Dimensional Scaffolds Help Stem Cells Produce Hyaline Cartilage



Wael Kafienah and colleagues in a study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatism took mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow of patients with osteoarthritis and seeded them onto polyglycolic acid scaffolds in tissue culture and then added transforming growth factor beta. They found that these constructs synthesized an extensive amount of proteoglycans- protein complexes critical for normal cartilage growth- as well as type 2 collagen, another important factor found in normal cartilage. They concluded that this model could be used to treat osteoarthritis in the future.
