What Are Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Adults also have what are called mesenchymal stem cells present in various areas including fat, bone marrow, the periosteum of bone, and other regions.  These are multipotent and their value is the ability to regenerate into connective tissue, specifically cartilage and bone. While there have been some concerns about their regenerative capacity, it is now believed these stem cells are more “plastic” than once thought and can be very effective for the treatment of disorders such as arthritis. These are the types of stem cells that are referred to as repair stem cells since they are the ones who are primarily responsible for repairing damage to connective tissue.
