Adult stem cells are responsible for maintenance of normal homeostasis, meaning the replacement of old or damaged tissue. When the organism is functioning properly, balance between non-functioning old tissue and new healthy tissue is obtained. Under certain disease conditions and with progressive aging, loss of adult stem cell function occurs leading to degenerative conditions as well as conditions affecting the immune system.
